Style:
Zhuang Quan
Description:
The Zhuang minority tribe has one of the largest populations
of any minority in China, with over 15 million people, most
of which reside in the Guanxi region and the rest living in
Yunnan. They trace the origins of their kung fu all the way
back to 777 which was during a particularly unstable period
of the Tang dynasty. During this period, China suffered many
invasions from the Border States of Tibet and Yunnan from
which the Tang dynasty never fully recovered. The Zhuang tribe
staged their own revolution named Du Lau Qi Yi. Today one
can see paintings depicting the revolution on the walls of
a cave located in the

southwest portion of Guanxi. These
paintings also display early renditions of Zhuang Quan armed
fighters and horsemen. Up until the Song Dynasty, their fighting
style was known as Nan Man Quan (southern barbarian fist).
This
style includes a wide array of weapon forms including broadsword,
straight sword, spear, bow, blowguns and throwing darts. Its
character is very powerful and hard. It is a close range combat
style that focuses only on methods of killing. Shouts used
to channel chi are spoken using the Zhuang language.
