Martial Arts Guide

Style: Jeet Kune Do

Jeet Kune Do, or the Way of the Intercepting Fist, was developed by Bruce Lee based on his wide study of martial arts. His intention was to create an effective fighting art based on a set of principles and concepts.

In creating JKD he drew from a wide variety of martial arts and fighting styles. His "melting pot" approach sought to take the best of every system and strip it down to the essence of sound technique to find what works. Bruce Lee himself did not call JKD a style, considering it instead an art form, a philosophy, and many today refer to his methods and ideas as JKD concepts. Bruce Lee's theories are also taught and practiced as Jun Fan Gung Fu. Bruce Lee majored in Philosophy at the University of Washington and he studied Wing Chun under Yip Man.

Bruce Lee (1940-1973) changed the history of kung fu in the West, doing more to popularize the Chinese martial arts in the U.S. and around the world than anyone else before. His films brought the kung fu genre into the mainstream with Enter the Dragon (1973).

His untimely death was a tragedy; yet, his spirit lives on in his art and his martial arts. One thing is certain - kung fu as we know it today would not have been possible without Bruce Lee.
